In the Oriental Garden, there is a monumental panel of 166 tiles entitled “Portuguese Adventures in Japan”, which illustrates the early days of the centuries-old link between Portugal and Japan. This majestic work is a tribute to the cultural and commercial links established over the centuries.

Three imposing panels, 7 metres high and 6 metres wide, dedicated to the four elements of nature: earth, fire, air and water. Earth and fire are represented by vibrant colours, while air is captured by a reflection and water is symbolised by a flowing stream. These works offer an artistic interpretation of the natural elements that sustain life.

The recent remodelling of the upper galleries of the Monte Palace Madeira Museum has led to the creation of a Garden of Contemporary Zimbabwean Sculpture. This innovative space displays an impressive collection of sculptures that evoke the African context in harmony with the garden's collection of cycads. Visitors are offered the opportunity to admire these works reflecting the cultural and artistic wealth of Africa, and to be transported back to the place in which the sculptures were created.

A recent addition to the garden is the work “mil e um quebra-mares” (1001 breakwaters) by Madeiran artist Ricardo Barbeito. This sculptural installation represents deserted islands and is positioned elegantly in a pond in front of the Palace. The work provides a visual link with the islands off Madeira, offering visitors a poetic and contemporary vision of the local landscape.

Next to the central pond are two Manueline windows, outstanding examples of Portuguese Gothic. A number sculptures from different countries are scattered throughout the garden, illustrating different styles and periods. The avenues and paths are decorated with stone arches and an impressive collection of stone coats of arms, representing the national coat of arms and those of a number of Portuguese noble families. These items add a rich historical and architectural dimension to the garden's ambience.
