Monte Palace has a long and illustrious history, dating back to the 18th century when the British Consul Charles Murray transformed the property around Monte Church into a leisure estate, which later became known as 'Quinta do Prazer'.

In 1897, Alfredo Guilherme Rodrigues transformed the property into a hotel, inspired by the palaces on the banks of the River Rhine. He built a palatial house that was later transformed into the Monte Palace Hotel.

But it wasn't until 1987 that Monte Palace began to take on the shape we know today, thanks to the innovative vision of José Manuel Rodrigues Berardo. A passionate art collector and philanthropist, Berardo transformed Monte Palace into a world-renowned tropical garden where nature and art merge sublimely.
Today the garden, with its many collections, is a living testimony to his commitment to preserving and celebrating cultural and natural diversity.
