Located at the garden’s highest point, the Monte Palace Madeira Museum is a three-storey exhibition space. On the ground floor, visitors can explore an impressive collection of minerals, gems and petrified wood. The other floors are dedicated to modern and contemporary art, offering a broad overview of the evolution and diversity of contemporary artistic expression.

For the first time, the Monte Palace Madeira Museum presents the modern and Collection Association’s contemporary art collection | Berardo Collection. 


Spread across the two upper floors, the exhibition begins with the work Constructivo Sombreado (Shaded Constructivism) (1930) by Joaquín Torres-García, in the “O Início da Viagem” (Beginning of the Journey) section. On the second floor, “A Descoberta da Escala” (The Discovery of Scale) displays works by various international artists, offering a glimpse of monumentality and artistic diversity.

With more than 200 pieces covering such movements as abstract expressionism, constructivism, pop art, body art and more, the collection features renowned artists including Lourdes Castro and Joana Vasconcelos. A recent addition is the work of Manuela Pimentel, who explores the theme of Portuguese tiles.

Minerals have fascinated mankind since ancient times and have been used in jewellery and decorative objects. The mineral collection, with around 700 specimens from different countries, displays an impressive variety of colours, lustre and shapes, as well as petrified wood from Argentina.

The exhibition simulates natural formation environments and includes suspended pieces that create a sense of planetary space. Explore the beauty and Mother Nature’s Secrets through this unique collection.
