The History of Portugal
This collection of 40 terracotta tile panels were commissioned in the early 90’s by José Berardo from the Argentinean artist Alberto Cedrón and is based on the theme “História de Portugal” (History of Portugal).
This collection provides students or indeed any visitor, with visual images depicting the main events in Portuguese history. Beginning with the reign of D. Afonso Henriques (1109 – 1185) through all the kings and up to the First Republic, covering the period from 1910 to 1926. It concludes with a panel featuring the Third Republic, which includes the 1974 revolution and other later events such as Portugal’s joining the European Economic Community in 1986.
Although the Autonomous Region of Madeira is referred to in general, the artist chose to produce a specific double panel dedicated exclusively to the history of the Island.
